Modern Times Stage Company | Call for Apprentice: Newcomer, Immigrant or Refugee Artists

Modern Times Stage Company is continuing our Apprenticeship Program for Newcomer, Immigrant or Refugee Artists, and looking for an apprentice to join. The ideal candidate is someone who is keen to immerse themselves in the Toronto theatre industry – learning holistically about theatre, the industry in Toronto and Canada, as well as growing their own artistic voice and prowess within their desired artistic fields.

As an apprentice with Modern Times you can expect to:

  • Shadow, engage, and be involved with our strategic planning, artistic programming, and business & operational execution;
  • Shadow, engage, and assist in the planning and execution of new play development activities, including workshops and outreach to other artists;
  • Shadow, engage, and assist in all networking, fundraising, and other business / partnership related activities
  • Learn a whole lot about budgets, grant writing, and producing theatre in our unique diverse, contemporary Canadian context.

Interested applicants should send a letter of intent (1pg) along with a resume to submis[email protected]. In the letter please tell us a bit about your artistic practice, your background, what type of theatre you are excited about, and what you hope to achieve in the year with us.

Apprenticeship Honorarium $3,500

Deadline to Submit is Friday, October 27, 2023.

Selected applicants will be contacted for an interview.

ABOUT US

Modern Times creates original Canadian art, reimagines classic work, and adapts plays in different languages and contexts to bring holistic and innovative forms to our contemporary and diverse Toronto audiences. We are committed to exploring, imagining and creating exciting, radical, performing arts in Toronto, while empowering voices that have been historically and presently marginalized – focusing on artists who have immigrated or sought asylum in Canada. Our recent shows include “No Save Points” (with Outside the March), “Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo” (with Crow’s Theatre), and “The House of Bernarda Alba” (with Aluna Theatre and Buddies in Bad Times). We have been nominated and awarded 65+ Dora Awards in our 32 years of operating.

Modern Times is proudly, and sadly, the only Toronto-based Theatre company that prioritizes empowering immigrants, newcomers and refugees as part of our core mandate.

If there are any questions, please contact Artistic Producer & Company Manager, Steph Crothers ([email protected]).

We thank everyone who applies, but will only reach out to shortlisted candidates for an interview.
