The Modern Times Stage Company was established in Toronto in 1989. We create original plays, revisit classical work and translate the plays of Iranian dramatists. Founded by Soheil Parsa and Peter Farbridge, the company’s work has performed in Colombia, Cuba, Iran, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Denmark. Known for the high quality of its theatre productions directed by Parsa, the company has received 60 Dora awards and nominations in its 31 years of operation.
Themes of loneliness, the mystery of existence, the search for happiness and truth, and the conflict between Fate and Will are often at the centre of Modern Times’ works. The productions are usually placeless and timeless; design elements are ultimately simpler. This aesthetic transcends cultural and political borders, which is what the company strives for in its creations: to move away from ideology towards a vocabulary that can bridge different communities and perspectives. These principles have matured into a unique posture in terms of working across differences in the rehearsal hall.
Modern Time Stage Company would like to acknowledge the sacred land on which it operates. This land is the traditional territory of many nations: the Wendat, the Haudenosaunee, and the Anishinaabe, including the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land and to share our space with all peoples – those indigenous to Turtle Island and those from the world.
