“The rest”, says Hamlet, “is silence.”

A Look Back…

Retrospective #4 in honour of Modern Times’ 30th anniversary season.

Remembering John Evans

The setting for this story is Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”. From 1997 to 1999, co-artistic directors Soheil Parsa and Peter Farbridge adapted this text, reducing scenes, creating non-verbal ones, honing in the action. Soheil rehearsed it over 11 weeks into a quick-paced two hours, with minimal set and props, and a rich visual and aural life provided by sound designer Richard Feren and lighting by Andrea Lundy.

The cast included Christopher Barry, Sean Baek, Terrence Bryant, Juno Cocknell-Mills, John Evans, Peter Farbridge, Stavroula Logothettis, Dax Lough, K. Scott Malcolm and Gregory Thomas.

Last week, on September 28th, 2019, John Evans’ voice left us. John was a towering figure, literally and figuratively, on stage. His Claudius was commanding, his text crystal clear. Our heart-felt condolences go out to his friends and family.
