Modern Times’
artistic aesthetic is inspired by
company values that we have emulated in our creative process since the
foundation of the company in 1989. Our commitment to these principals has led us
to develop projects that directly impact our community.
“Take a Stand!”: The Youth Theatre Unit
An
annual collaboration between the Modern Times Stage Company, local NGOs and
academic institutions, “Take a Stand!” encourages youth 16 to 21 years of age to
see the potential of alternative, risk-taking theatre to speak about
contemporary issues in our society.
For
two weeks every year, seven
young
people from diverse cultural backgrounds receive Scene Study and Dramaturgy
classes in Modern Times’ unique methodology, using scene material from an up and
coming playwright. Partnerships are formed with selected NGOs in the GTA,
depending upon the key social issue in the chosen play. These organizations
initiate discussions with the young people about these issues and the questions
they raise for Canadians.
In the final week of the research-lab the participants are guided to create a
short, publicly presented theatre piece that encompasses the elements of their
learning over the two weeks

The Dialogues Project
Based
on the company's vision of theatre of creating dialogue between differing
cultures and points of view, The Dialogues Project is an international theatre project in which members of
Modern Times creative team collaborate with theatre artists in areas of the world affected by
conflict. The company uses one of its award-winning
productions,
Aurash,
a humanist fable about a borderless world.
